Every June 16, World Refill Day makes the case for reuse. Here's ours.
Single-use packaging had a good run. It's over.
World Refill Day exists because the refill — the simple act of filling the same container, cup or bottle again — is still a radical act in a world built around disposables. In 2026, that shouldn't still be true. And yet here we are, still making the case.
KeepCup has been making the case since 2009. Not with campaigns. With thoughtfully designed reusable products.
What World Refill Day Actually Is
World Refill Day is a global campaign started by City to Sea, held every year on June 16. The goal is straightforward: drive awareness of reuse, push back on single-use plastic, and make refilling the default — not the exception.
In the UK alone, 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups go to waste every year. Globally, over 500 billion single-use plastic bottles are produced annually. World Refill Day is the one day a year when the numbers get loud enough that people actually stop and read them.
The other 364 days are what matter.
The Refill Habit
The thing about reuse is that it only works when it becomes automatic. Nobody saves the planet by thinking about it once. The behaviour has to become the baseline.
That's always been KeepCup's actual brief — not to make a reusable cup, but to make one good enough that reaching for it becomes the habit. A cup that fits the machine, holds the temperature, looks like something worth carrying. A water bottle with a lid you actually want to use. A bowl that makes lunch feel considered rather than an afterthought.
Design in service of behaviour change. The refill follows.
The Numbers Worth Knowing
After just 15 uses, a KeepCup Original has already offset its production footprint against single-use. Most of ours are still going at 1,500.
After 24 uses, a Brew Cork has done the same. After 66, the Commuter Travel Mug. The maths only get better from there — every refill is another disposable that didn't exist.
Use our Impact Calculator to run your own numbers. The results tend to be surprising.
What to Do on World Refill Day 2026
Fill your cup before you leave the house. Carry the water bottle. Take the bowl to work. None of it requires a special occasion — but World Refill Day is a reasonable moment to start if you haven't already.
And if you're already doing it: good. You've been ahead of this for a while.
The refill is the point. It always was.
