What makes KeepCup reusable insulated cups sustainable?

The insulated range is made from lead-free, 90% recycled stainless steel and needs 66 uses to beat the environmental impact of 1,000 disposable cup uses.

  • 90% recycled steel: Lead-free, electropolished stainless steel, engineered to resist rust and prevent flavours from lingering.
  • Electropolished, not coated: No ceramic coating means no flavour taint and one less manufacturing step, lowering embodied energy compared to coated alternatives.
  • Environmental payoff in 66 uses: A higher break-even than glass or plastic, because steel takes more to make — and then lasts.
  • Designed in Australia and assembled here: Tested for food safety.

The 66-use figure comes from our independent peer reviewed 2018 Life Cycle Analysis.

Across the range: modular parts you can replace individually, single-material components that separate at end of life, independent food-safety testing, 100% recycled paperboard packaging, and made by a certified B Corp that gives 1% of global revenue to environmental causes.

Why aren't KeepCup insulated Travel Mugs ceramic lined?

This is a quality issue. When the steel content is high enough, Stainless Steel is a food-safe material that can be used without a lining. We use BPA and BPS free 18/8 90% recycled stainless steel. It has no aftertaste, and therefore no ceramic lining is needed in our travel mugs.

Why are cafés moving away from single-use cups?

Because the cost of single-use is starting to arrive on invoices, and the direction of travel is clear.

Overseas, Extended Producer Responsibility is already reshaping the maths. The EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation came into force in August 2026, making producers pay for what happens to packaging after the sale — collection, sorting, recycling, all of it. Seven US states have enacted their own packaging EPR laws, with early estimates putting fee exposure close to 1% of sales in each jurisdiction. Nothing equivalent applies in Australia yet, but this is what’s coming, and it’s worth understanding before it lands.

The distinction that matters for a café: a cup filled at point of sale counts as service packaging and sits in scope. A cup a customer brings from home, empty, doesn’t. That’s the commercial case for reuse in one regulatory sentence.

Reuse doesn’t dodge the fee. We pay EPR on the cartons our cups ship in, like everyone else. The difference is what the fee is calculated on: a KeepCup generates one packaging event and then years of use, while a disposable cup generates a packaging event every single time. It gets taxed once, not a thousand times.

KeepCup has been a café business since 2009. The sizes match café pour volumes, the lids are built for the walk out the door, and the whole range is modular so a worn part doesn’t cost you a cup. Tax the packaging, and watch behaviour follow the incentive it’s actually being paid to follow.

Why do cafes and roasters choose KeepCup?

KeepCup was designed around the way baristas make and serve coffee. The clear body keeps the pour visible, from the colour and crema to the moment the drink is ready. The press-fit lid sits above the surface instead of dragging across it, helping the crema reach the customer intact.

The proportions follow real coffee orders - flat whites, lattes and long blacks - rather than fast-food cup sizing. The shape supports a clean pour without drips down the side or the need to repour.
That relationship with specialty coffee goes back to the beginning. Campos Coffee bought the first
KeepCup in 2009, helping bring the idea of a good coffee and a good cup together.

The plastic range is designed in Australia and assembled here, keeping manufacturing and quality control close.
It is a reusable cup made for the people behind the coffee machine as much as the person carrying it.
